Tennessee Education Association

Great Public Schools for All Students

Organizing Summit

The Organizing Summit brings together TEA leaders, members and traditional public schools activists to share our collective wisdom, skills and talents. Members will discover how local associations can form community partnerships and engage educators around saving traditional public schools, fighting for students and educators, promoting social and racial justice, and preserving the association.

This year's theme is "NO FEAR HERE — Changing the Tides in Public Education." Featured tracks consist of online to offline organizing, member engagement, home visits, racial justice, organizing around the PECCA vote and political elections.

Sessions and descriptions are listed below. On your online registration, you will be required to rank your preference for each session (each participant will have the opportunity to attend at least 3 sessions). Each session will be limited to the first 25 participants. The preference will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.

  • Organizing for Racial & Social Justice: Participants will discuss strategies to organize around racial and social justice issues that impact the lives of students, educators and the community they serve.
  • Organizing around PECCA, Education Policies and Legal Victories: In this session, participants will hear from TEA's legal team on education policies and victories won in the last couple of years. Local leaders will also be on hand to share successful PECCA tactics used to organize around working conditions.
  • Organizing 101: This hands-on session will provide proven tactics used in organizing campaigns. Participants will learn how to train, organize, and mobilize local leaders around educational issues for a successful campaign.
  • Organizing Community Partnerships: Participants will learn how schools improved student outcomes and strengthened communities through the community schools model. Participants will leave with steps to form a local Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools committee, organize community leaders to join the movement and steps to establish a community school in their district.
  • Organizing New Educators: This session will provide strategies to recruit and organize 0 – 5 year educators for membership. The session will also address issues relevant to early educators to become successful teachers.
  • Organizing for Local and State Elections: Participants will learn how to identify electable candidates, strategies to win a local or state election and methods to organize educators to vote for the recommended candidate.

Each conference participant will receive a FREE t-shirt.
